Common Plumbing Problems for Homeowners and How to Troubleshoot Them

Plumbing issues are some of the most common home repairs we called about in Queenstown, Wanaka and Surrounding Areas, but many can be easily diagnosed and fixed with a little troubleshooting.  Whether you’re dealing with a leaky tap or a slow-draining sink, understanding the basics of plumbing can save you time and money.  Our tips below will cover some of the most common plumbing problems and how to troubleshoot them.

Clogged Drains:

One of the most frequent issues homeowners face is a clogged drain.  The causes can range from food or oil buildup in the kitchen sink to hair and soap scum in the bathroom.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Avoid Certain Products: Putting certain products such as cooking oil, grease, fat, coffee grinds, rice, potato peels, flour and dough down the drain will definitely clog the system up.  By avoiding putting these items down the drain in the first instance you are already winning!
  2. Plunging: Start with a plunger—make sure it creates a tight seal over the drain and give it a few strong pumps.
  3. Drain Snake: If plunging doesn’t work, a drain snake (or auger) can help break up more stubborn clogs.
  4. Natural Drain Cleaner: If you prefer eco-friendly options, try pouring a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down the drain, followed by hot water.

Leaking Taps: Leaving a leaking taps can turn into a bigger problem, wasting water and increasing your utility bills.  In many cases, a worn-out washer is the culprit.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Turn Off the Water Supply: Before you begin, shut off the water to the tap to avoid any water damage.
  2. Replace the Washer: Remove the handle and tap valve and replace the washer, which is usually the cause of the leak.
  3. Check for Corrosion: If the washer doesn’t solve the problem, corrosion in the valve or pipe may be the issue.

Low Water Pressure: Low water pressure can make everyday tasks like showering, laundry or washing dishes frustrating.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Clean Tap Aerators: Mineral buildup can block water flow.  Unscrew the aerator from the tap and soak it in vinegar overnight, then scrub it clean.
  2. Check for Leaks: A slow water leak in the plumbing system can reduce pressure.  Inspect exposed pipes for leaks or dampness.
  3. Examine the Pressure Regulator: If the house has a pressure regulator, it could be malfunctioning.  Test the pressure and adjust the regulator if needed.

Running Toilets: A running toilet is not only annoying and noisy but also wastes a lot of water.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Check the Flapper: The flapper may not be sealing properly, causing water to continuously flow.  Replace it if necessary.
  2. Adjust the Fill Valve: If the water level in the tank is too high, it can overflow into the overflow tube.  Adjust the fill valve to control the water level.
  3. Replace the Flush Valve: If the above solutions don’t work, the flush valve could be worn out and needs to be replaced.

Burst Pipes: A burst pipe can be a major plumbing emergency, especially during cold weather.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Shut Off the Water: If you suspect a burst pipe, immediately turn off the water supply to prevent flooding and further damage.
  2. Call a Professional: Once you’ve shut off the water, contact a professional plumber to assess the damage and replace the pipe.

While many plumbing issues can be easily fixed with a little effort, regular maintenance is key to preventing these problems.  If you’re ever unsure about a plumbing repair, it’s always best to consult a professional plumber to avoid making the situation worse.
