How to Unblock a Water Filter

Water filters get blocked due to the accumulation of various substances and particles over time.  Unblocking a water filter involves several steps and can depend on the type of filter you have installed.  Here are general steps that help with most water filters:

For Refrigerator or Faucet Filters:

  1. Turn Off Water Supply: Ensure the water supply to the filter is turned off to prevent any water flow.
  2. Remove the Filter: Carefully remove the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Rinse the Filter: Rinse the filter under warm water to remove any debris or buildup. You can gently use a soft brush to scrub away any visible blockages.
  4. Soak in Vinegar Solution: Soak the filter in a mixture of one part vinegar to three parts water for a few hours to dissolve mineral buildup. Rinse thoroughly afterward.
  5. Reinstall the Filter: Place the filter back into its housing, ensuring it’s securely in place.
  6. Flush the Filter: Turn the water supply back on and run water through the filter for a few minutes to clear any remaining debris.

For Whole House or Under-Sink Filters:

  1. Turn Off Water Supply: Shut off the main water supply to the filter system.
  2. Release Pressure: Open a tap downstream of the filter to release any built-up pressure in the system.
  3. Remove the Filter Housing: Unscrew the filter housing using a filter wrench if necessary.
  4. Remove and Clean the Filter: Take out the filter cartridge and clean it as described above (rinsing and soaking in vinegar solution).
  5. Clean the Housing: Wipe down the inside of the filter housing to remove any sediment or debris.
  6. Reassemble the Filter: Place the cleaned or a new filter cartridge back into the housing, and screw it back on securely.
  7. Turn On Water Supply: Slowly turn the water supply back on, checking for leaks.
  8. Flush the System: Run water through the system for a few minutes to ensure everything is working properly and any air is expelled.

For Portable Filters (e.g., water pitchers, portable camping filters):

  1. Disassemble the Filter: Remove the filter from the pitcher or portable unit.
  2. Clean the Filter: Rinse the filter under warm water and scrub gently if needed.
  3. Soak in Vinegar Solution: Similar to other filters, soak in a vinegar solution to dissolve buildup.
  4. Rinse and Reassemble: Rinse thoroughly and reassemble the filter into the unit.

For Exterior Disc Filters:

  1. Close Toby Valve at the Boundary: Shut off the main water supply to the filter system.
  2. Release Pressure: Open a tap briefly then close the valve on the downstream side of the filter to prevent draining the household system.
  3. Remove the filter cover so the discs are accessible:  The discs are loosened and while covering the filter with a plastic bag remove the discs.
  4. Thoroughly rinse and clean the discs in clean water in a bucket then reassemble.

Maintenance Tips:

  1. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of water filters are essential to ensure optimal performance and prevent blockages.
  2. Regularly replace filter cartridges as recommended by the manufacturer.
  3. Avoid using harsh chemicals for cleaning, as they may damage the filter components.
  4. Keep a regular maintenance schedule to be ahead of the game to prevent clogs from forming.

If you experience persistent issues, it may be time to replace the filter with a new one.  If the filter is damaged, it won’t function properly even after cleaning.  Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for specific guidance related to your filter model.
